2016 Abreu, Madrona Ranch

Harvest always begins with a scavenger hunt at Madrona Ranch. Parts of nine different blocks were combed through on September 15 to create the first component of the blend—a Cabernet Franc and Merlot prominent fermentation. Portions of the same blocks were picked again on September 22 to form a more dense and angular blending component, this time with more Petit Verdot. Two days later, the first of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc bases came together. This pick was more focused on the gravelly loam we see on the east side of the vineyard. The older vines composed the fourth selection, the core coming from the vines planted in 1980 and 1986. Lastly, on September 28, the oldest Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc came off to form the central core of the 2016 blend. 16 barrels combined to create a blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Cabernet Franc, 15% Petit Verdot and 6% Merlot.
